A 44-year-old cyanotic, comatose man was brought to the coronary care unit after being found in a meadow by passers-by. During intubation, the nurse removed the patient's dentures and placed them on the crash cart. The medical team performed extensive CPR for about an hour and a half before achieving sufficient heart rhythm and blood pressure. The patient remained ventilated, intubated, and comatose, requiring transfer to the ICU for continued artificial respiration.
After more than a week, when the patient had recovered and returned to the cardiac ward, he immediately recognized the nurse and said "Oh, that nurse knows where my dentures are." He then accurately described how the nurse had removed his dentures and placed them in the sliding drawer underneath the crash cart with bottles on it. Remarkably, this occurred while the patient was in deep coma during CPR. The patient reported seeing himself lying in bed from above and observing how nurses and doctors performed CPR. He correctly described the small resuscitation room and the appearance of all present, including specific details about the nurse. During his out-of-body experience, he was very afraid the medical team would stop CPR and he would die. He desperately tried to communicate that he was still alive. The experience profoundly affected him - he is no longer afraid of death. Four weeks after the incident, he left the hospital as a healthy man.
