A 16-year-old girl was swimming underwater in her family's pool during a summer party in 1981 when a drunken partygoer jumped in and playfully grabbed her, dragging her to the bottom. Having just completed a lap underwater, she had no air reserve and quickly lost consciousness, remaining unconscious for approximately two minutes before being rescued.
During her NDE, she found herself drifting upward in darkness, feeling peaceful and calm rather than fearful. She witnessed two childhood scenes in vivid color against the darkness - first her younger sister at age 3-4 playing with their cat, then their deceased dog Pepper. She became aware of a distant light that grew brighter as she moved toward it through what felt like a dark tunnel, accelerating as she progressed. Within the light, she encountered a beautiful woman with long dark-blonde hair and blue eyes, dressed in white, with outstretched hands radiating motherly love. The subject felt overwhelming peace, awe, and love in the presence of this angelic being. Her only desire was to reach the safety of those outstretched hands. However, just before she could reach the figure, the woman withdrew her hands and communicated telepathically through her eyes that it was not yet her time and she must return. She immediately found herself back in her body on the pool deck, gasping for breath after being rescued. The experience scored 26 on the NDE Scale, classified as a Transcendental Type NDE with strong paranormal and affective components.
