During a pilgrimage to Mecca, Dr. Fonzo was driving to Cairo with two nurses when they had a serious car accident. One nurse remained uninjured, but the second nurse, a man, suffered a concussion and lost consciousness. After Dr. Fonzo provided medical care, the nurse regained consciousness and described his experience with remarkable precision. He accurately detailed what Fonzo and the other nurse had done during his unconsciousness, including specific aspects of the resuscitation process. The nurse reported entering a tunnel but not reaching its end because a mufti (religious teacher) dressed in a white robe gave him a sign to return. Throughout the entire experience, he described his mind or consciousness as being connected to his physical body by a luminous cord, similar to a beam of light. This silver cord connection is rarely reported in modern NDEs but has historical precedent in spiritual literature. The nurse was notably bewildered by the discrepancy between his experience and traditional Muslim afterlife expectations.
