A 39-year-old man suffering from severe palpitations experienced cardiac arrest while playing badminton and required intensive care treatment. Before being taken to the hospital, he became unconscious and during this critical period experienced floating in a dark space. He distinctly remembered having an unusual peace of mind state for brief moments, feeling totally at peace. This peaceful floating sensation in darkness occurred while his heart had stopped and he was clinically dead. Upon regaining consciousness after resuscitation, he somewhat regretted leaving this peaceful mind state. In the hospital following this experience, he required cardioversion with a direct current electrical shock of 100 watt-seconds. Seven years later, when he attempted to play badminton again, he had the same cardiac event and near-death experience, again requiring resuscitation. The consistent nature of the experience across two separate cardiac arrests suggests a genuine phenomenon related to the dying process.
