A 50-year-old woman experienced a profound altered state of consciousness when tension on her mind caused her to fall unconscious for several minutes. She heard her maidservant and husband running and calling her name as if from a great distance, their voices seeming to echo from far away. During this episode, she experienced going through complete blackness accompanied by a tingling sound of tiny bells in her ears. The darkness was described as very dark with circles appearing despite the darkness. The predominant feeling was one of complete relief, lightness, and ecstasy - not like deep slumber where nothing is felt, but a conscious experience of euphoria. After recovering from this brief unconscious state, she felt her life was transformed. She became more bold in her approach to life and learned to take life as it comes. Most significantly, she reported being no longer afraid of death.
