In the second half of 2013, D. Cameron Murchison Jr. experienced a serious surgical mistake during what was supposed to be a routine procedure. The error went undetected for several days, allowing infection to spread to his bloodstream and seriously compromise his life. This led to two major surgical repairs four months apart, with complicated infection control, pulmonary therapy, and various medical complications requiring extended hospitalization and nine months of convalescence. Murchison describes lingering unknowingly in the shadow of death for several days if not weeks. Though he has little memory of the most severe parts of the hospital experience, the encounter gave him profound insights about mortality, loss, and what matters most in life. He reflects on the dual nature of loss in death - both for those who die and those left behind, drawing parallels to Moses seeing the Promised Land but not entering it. The experience taught him about the preciousness of relationships, the importance of addressing regrets while still alive, and a deeper understanding of eternal connection through faith. He emerged with gratitude for his recovery, a fresh awareness of life's priorities, and recognition that the shadow of death serves as a teacher about what is most important. The experience reinforced his understanding that in God's embrace, the living and the dead are brought together, and that death, while bringing loss and frustration, is ultimately a friend that reminds us of our eternal nature and connection to all that exists.
