Dr. A.S. Wiltse, a physician from Skiddy, Kansas, experienced an extraordinary near-death experience in 1889 while suffering from typhoid fever. He passed approximately four hours without pulse or perceptible heartbeat, as confirmed by Dr. S.H. Raynes, the attending physician. Several bystanders believed he was dead, and the village church bell was tolled. Dr. Raynes observed only occasional, barely perceptible gasps by bringing his eyes close to Wiltse's face. Needle pricks at various body points produced no response. During this state of apparent death lasting about half an hour, Wiltse experienced a remarkable separation of consciousness from his physical form. He described observing his soul intimately interwoven with his bodily tissues, then experiencing a lateral rocking motion that broke his connection with the body. He felt and heard the snapping of innumerable small cords, beginning at his toes and progressing to his heels. His consciousness slowly retreated from his feet toward his head, collecting entirely within his skull. Emerging from his head like a jellyfish in color and form, he floated like a soap bubble before breaking loose and falling to the floor. He then expanded into full human stature, appearing translucent with a bluish cast. Initially naked and embarrassed, he found himself clothed upon reaching the door. To his surprise, another person's arm passed through his without resistance, and no one could see him. Observing his pale corpse on the couch, he noted how he had composed the body with hands clasped at the chest. Unable to gain anyone's attention, he wandered outside, observing the street with unusual clarity, noting the red soil and rain washes. He discovered he had become larger than in earth life. A small cord like a spider's web ran from his spirit body's shoulders back to his physical body's neck base. He became aware of a vast intelligence presence entering a cloud, which communicated through black vapor tongues touching his head, conveying thoughts about the boundary between worlds. Approaching rocks marking this boundary, he was told he could cross if his earthly work was complete or return if not. As he attempted to cross, deciding to stay in the afterlife, a black cloud stopped him, draining his power to move or think. He then found himself back in his physical body, exclaiming in astonishment about having to die again.
