Dr. Donald R. Morse, a dentist and researcher on sabbatical from Temple University, experienced a profound near-death experience in June 1983 while hospitalized for giardiasis complications. After suffering severe abdominal cramps and anxiety, he was transferred to a psychiatric facility in Philadelphia. On a bright Tuesday morning, while walking the hospital grounds, he decided to jog. Within moments, he began spinning in ever-widening circles as the world's sounds slowed and became distant. His heartbeat initially raced loudly, then gradually slowed until he could no longer feel it, and he fell to the ground believing his heart had stopped. First experiencing pitch darkness, Morse was then enveloped by an incredibly bright white light that filled his entire vision. He felt no fear, only security, warmth, and serenity, with a loving presence surrounding him though no figure appeared. His entire life then flashed before him in rapid succession - childhood tantrums, winning contests, hospital stays, family visits, sports victories, his father's death from lung cancer, his wedding, children's births, vacations, receiving research awards, and finally the moment of his collapse. Following the life review, Morse experienced an out-of-body state where he left his body, flew above the clouds, and arrived at Mt. Eden Cemetery in Valhalla, New York, where his parents were buried. He had a vague sense of being buried himself. The scene shifted to another day where he was reading the Philadelphia Inquirer obituary column and saw his own name, though he couldn't discern the details. Neither the funeral vision nor reading his obituary frightened him, protected by the wonderful light and caring presence. The experience ended when he received a sharp injection that revived him. Morse notes that while his visions of funeral and obituary were unique, the darkness followed by glorious light, life review, blissful feelings, and loving presence were similar to many other NDEs.
