Anna Atherton, a 14-year-old girl, fell gravely ill in November 1669. By February 1670, she had lost significant weight and appeared to die. Her family could detect no breathing using a looking glass under her nose, and she showed no response to hot coals placed on her feet. After lying in this death-like trance for seven days, she suddenly regained consciousness and shared an extraordinary experience with her mother. During her trance state, Anna reported traveling to heaven, guided by an angel who led her through three gates. She arrived at the heaven gate where she witnessed glorious and unutterable sights including saints and angels in glorious apparel. She heard divine music, anthems, and hallelujahs that were beyond earthly description. Anna attempted to enter heaven but was stopped by the angel, who told her she could not be admitted yet and must return to take leave of her friends, after which she would be admitted in a short time. Upon returning, Anna insisted an angel in white was standing at her bedside, visible to her but not to others. To prove she was not dreaming, Anna provided veridical evidence by naming three or four people who had died during her seven-day trance. One death was unknown to the family until they sent to inquire, confirming her knowledge. She reported seeing these deceased individuals passing by while she stood at the heaven gate. One person she named, known to be vicious, came to the gate but was sent back another way. After sharing her experience, Anna lived for two more years before dying after a few months of illness, during which she consumed almost nothing except orange juice and egg yolk.
