Bob, a white South African man in his 60s, experienced an NDE approximately 20 years prior while in South Africa. He came out of a coma following his experience. When he regained consciousness, he was helped to make sense of his NDE by a physician who told him he had gone through an "after life" experience. The NDE had lasting spiritual significance for Bob. Following the experience, he found that traditional church services could no longer satisfy his spiritual needs - he felt he already knew what would be said and needed to find a service at his level. Bob struggled with depression and suicidal ideation throughout his life, and the memory of his NDE became particularly significant during a suicide attempt in 2013 when he felt a spiritual force that made him change his mind about taking his life. He described feeling born again and having been given another chance. The NDE continued to influence his worldview and spiritual understanding decades after it occurred.
