A man who had been ill died and found himself on an unknown road which he traversed for some time. The road divided and he hesitated which branch to take. While hesitating, a native approached, took him by the arm, and led him along one branch. The man became increasingly disturbed by his guide's villainous countenance. When he demanded to know where they were going, the guide sinisterly replied "Never you mind, come on." Terrified, the man cried for help. A third person came running across the lands with a cross marked on his brow. At the sight of him, the evil guide fled. The newcomer, out of breath, explained that the road led to hell and urged the man to turn back and send for a teacher. He did so, returned to life, and sent for the catechist. The catechist marked a cross on his brow, designating him a catechumen. The man lay down contentedly and that night died again. His friends made his coffin and dug his grave, sending for the catechist to bury him. However, he returned to life again and stated that his cross had vanished - it was only temporary. His Christian guide had told him he needed baptism. He returned to life reproachful about what he considered a trick, demanding baptism. After receiving baptism, he died again and stayed dead. This remarkable sequence of deaths and returns centered on the spiritual requirement of baptism for entering heaven.
