Mary Goffe of Rochester, suffering from a long illness, was taken to her father's house at West-Mulling, nine miles from her home. On June 3, 1691, the day before her death, she desperately wanted to see her two children left at home with a nurse. Despite being told she was too ill to travel, she insisted she must see them. Between one and two o'clock in the morning of June 4th, she fell into a trance-like state. Witness widow Turner observed her eyes were open and fixed, her jaw fallen, with no perceivable breath. The next day, Mary told her mother she had been home with her children during the night while asleep. Remarkably, the nurse at Rochester, widow Alexander, swore she saw Mary's likeness emerge from the children's chamber around 2 AM, standing by her bedside for about fifteen minutes. The apparition's eyes moved and mouth opened but said nothing. When the nurse invoked the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the appearance vanished. Mary died later that same day, June 4th, 1691.
