Ms. A, a 21-year-old college student, was awakened early one morning with severe nausea, vomiting, and chest pain. She developed stiffness in her arms and a grabbing pain in her chest, recognizing she was having a heart attack. Despite calling out to her boyfriend for help, he believed she was having a bad dream and ignored her plea. She then experienced a profound out-of-body experience, floating one to two feet above her body, which was completely unfamiliar and disconcerting to her as she had never heard of such phenomena.
During her out-of-body state, Ms. A was met by an invisible presence that she felt knew her intimately and with which she felt comfortable. This presence had an authoritative quality and communicated through what she described as sentient energy transmission rather than words. She then experienced a rapid life review, likened to scrolling through a computer screen or flipping through a Rolodex, lasting about seven seconds. This review revealed that she had been excessively self-critical and blamed herself for everything in her life, bringing immediate resolution and relief about her past. Subsequently, Ms. A became aware of a small group of presences with distinguishing characteristics including gender and color tones. These beings created a comfort zone as she began feeling increasingly light and ecstatic. She was drawn toward a tunnel with a magnetic sensation between her heart and the tunnel, experiencing ecstasy beyond anything she had previously felt. The presences informed her she had three things to accomplish and gave her a choice to stay or return, warning she had three seconds to decide before the option to return would expire. After deciding to return, Ms. A found herself back in her painful body with paramedics attending to her. Her boyfriend had eventually awakened to find her without a pulse and called for help. Remarkably, she had been without detectable vital signs for 36 minutes. Despite initial EKG readings resembling those of a 55-year-old woman with a massive coronary, her EKG returned to normal within one year.
