The experiencer was struck in the face by a pickup truck driven by a drunk driver traveling at 78 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone. As the truck began breaking their ribs, they knew they would be crushed in two. At that moment, their body and soul separated. The initial separation felt like being tumbled in the ocean, head over feet, for a few seconds. Then they found themselves walking in the street, unaware that their physical body was elsewhere. They experienced profound bliss and peace in a velvety black night with soft blue illumination.
After taking four steps (two left, two right), their friend's screams shattered the peace. They had been walking toward a tunnel where their deceased skating coach stood near the entrance. Turning around annoyed, they saw their body crumpled halfway under their crushed car. The realization struck them: "How can I be over there and over here at the same time?" They walked back to examine their body more closely and thought, "That body is still viable. How strange is this? I get to decide to stay or go back." They considered their desires to meet someone, get married, have children, and not destroy their loving parents. Though wanting to stay, they decided to ask God, who seemed to be looking over their left shoulder. God said "Go back" and they agreed. After being shown things (most not remembered), they turned into mist and re-entered their body through the top of their head. Remarkably, while observing from outside their body, they noticed a small eighth-inch trickle of blood from their left ear. The next morning, they confirmed this detail in the mirror, validating their out-of-body observations. An EMT who helped them reported seeing a peaceful blue light shining down from heaven specifically on them, describing it as the presence of God. This EMT had never before returned to an accident scene in 10 years but came back after his shift to see if the light remained. Four years later, when telling their friend about the experience, the friend confirmed they had died that night, saying the experiencer's eyes were open but "no one was home." The experience left lasting impacts, with the experiencer fighting not to float out of their body again during the ambulance ride.
