At age 18, the experiencer was in a motorcycle accident resulting in severe head injuries and a coma lasting approximately 10 days. They were given a million-to-one chance of survival, though they did not actually die or stop breathing. The experience occurred at some point before regaining consciousness. The experiencer has no memory of the accident itself or many days following it.
During the coma, they became aware of the presence of a friend who had died approximately 10 months previously. This deceased friend communicated that there was nothing to be afraid of. Following this reassurance, the experiencer became aware of a "presence" that defied description in words. The best available word they could use was "light." This presence communicated with them, asking what they wanted - did they want to stay in life or come. The destination of "coming" remained undefined and mysterious. Communication occurred without actual words in a form of direct knowing. The experiencer expressed willingness to return to life but indicated they would also be okay with leaving. After a pause, they received an answer that they would return to life. They were made aware that staying in life meant being caught up in all the emotions, worries, and challenges of earthly existence, while in the other place, these worries did not exist. They also knew this knowledge would fade over time. After awakening from the coma, they sometimes thought they might have made the wrong decision. During early recovery, they considered that if unable to handle life, they could "just kill myself." They told their mother about the experience but shared it with no one else until reading Moody's book years later, which astounded them with its similarities to their own experience.
