The experiencer reports multiple near-death experiences throughout their life. The most significant occurred in February 2008 when they died for 20 minutes from heart failure and were shocked five times by an ambulance crew. At the hospital, they were placed in an induced coma using freezer bags for five days, with only a 2% chance of survival and high probability of brain damage. During the coma, they received a blessing from their LDS (Latter Day Saints) bishop.
Upon awakening from the coma, their first words were that their bishop had given them a blessing, despite having no conscious awareness during the coma period. Over the following months, they slowly returned to consciousness and eventually resumed work and a relatively normal life. They noticed an increased sensitivity to light and color following the experience. Remarkably, they have no recollection of the couple of months before, during, or after the incident. The individual also reports three other NDEs: at age 14 after being thrown from a motorcycle at 35 mph; in September 1982 when developing a fever and experiencing an out-of-body state where their spirit rose 30-40 feet above their body looking down through a dark, silvery tunnel before returning after receiving a blessing; and in 1993 when they died for approximately five minutes from a pulmonary embolism but were "not allowed to remember anything" from that experience. The pattern of multiple NDEs and the religious context of receiving blessings during critical moments suggests a strong spiritual framework. The lasting effects include heightened sensory perception and complete amnesia for the period surrounding the most severe incident.
