Jack, a part-time hospital chaplain, was grading around his new pole barn foundation on a Monday afternoon in March 2009 when his tractor overturned, pinning him underneath the roll bar. The full weight of the tractor pressed on his lower back, making breathing increasingly difficult. He knew he was dying and began praying, saying goodbye to family members and asking God's forgiveness.
During the experience, Jack saw multiple profound visions. He witnessed his front yard transformed into a beautiful garden filled with flowers and people of all ages laughing with great happiness - what he now believes was a glimpse of heaven. His deceased parents appeared, walking toward him while smiling and holding hands with a small girl he believes was the child they lost in pregnancy. Most remarkably, he observed a large tube-like portal with a light at the far end, resembling an oversized dryer vent tube that was spinning with angels all around it, like an inverted tornado with the large end at the bottom. Jack floated to the opening of the tube and entered it, immediately feeling relief from pain and breathing difficulties. He experienced overwhelming love, compassion, understanding and calmness - "the peace that surpasses all understanding." He knew God was asking if he loved and accepted love. When his wife Carol called him for dinner, her voice seemed amplified by angels, and he was suddenly yanked back under the tractor. Carol found him and used a steel pipe to lift the tractor slightly, allowing him to breathe better until emergency services arrived. At shock trauma in Baltimore, extensive testing revealed no damage to any part of his body despite the crushing weight of the tractor. Three doctors examined him before discharge, with the last one calling him "lucky" to escape without major damage. Jack corrected her, saying he was "blessed," and she thoughtfully agreed. A year later, the medic who rescued him expressed astonishment that Jack had no permanent damage, saying "It sure wasn't a pretty sight when they pulled you out."
