A 30-year-old journalist-photographer in Melbourne, Australia, raised Roman Catholic but an avowed atheist at the time, suffered from recurring appendicitis that gradually worsened. Distrusting doctors, he avoided medical care until one day, while alone and experiencing symptoms, he hurried to his cousin's house. Finding no one home, he collapsed outside the rear door, doubled over in agony, feeling something trying to rip out from inside. He felt an internal explosion and gratefully lapsed into unconsciousness.
Emerging from unconsciousness with full clarity and alertness equal to his normal conscious state, he was amazed to see himself looking down on his crumpled, inert body on the floor. He felt puzzled by his detachment from his physical form, then experienced a force drawing him away into a tunnel with a rushing sensation that accelerated madly. After the speed lessened, he saw a powerful, loving light above in the void that eased his fears. He became aware of spiritual presences including his grandmother and father who radiated love. A voice communicated internally: "You haven't finished everything. You must go back." He protested but found himself speeding back down the tunnel. The experiencer observed his own body lying crumpled and inert on the floor from an elevated perspective. He maintained full clarity of vision and awareness, feeling certain he could have heard any sounds from below had someone been present. He experienced the tunnel travel and encountered deceased relatives including his grandmother and father in spirit form. Upon returning, he awakened on the floor aware of what happened. When his cousin found him and called a doctor who wanted to hospitalize him for emergency surgery, he insisted he was healed. The appendicitis never recurred. He subsequently traveled to Northern Australia to work with Aboriginal peoples, documenting their traditions and establishing successful art/craft programs nationwide. He discovered an intuitive ability to master crafts without training and developed self-healing capacities, including rapid wound healing.
