Following a long and difficult labor with spinal anesthetic, the experiencer was lying on a stretcher after delivery when she felt a tight band around her chest. A nurse checked her blood pressure at 70/30 and opened the IV line. Despite feeling wonderful and wanting to close the line, she couldn't move. A doctor ran up yelling "What the hell happened? She was fine a few minutes ago! Get the cart!" as medical staff rushed to respond to the emergency. The experiencer, having participated in many medical codes professionally, found watching her own resuscitation boring.
She left her body floating face down, observing herself on the stretcher with complete detachment. She felt wonderful with no pain or worries, noting the tops of walls faded into blackness with stars visible above. She found herself in an ethereal tunnel moving slowly toward a light with two beings present. The beings seemed flustered, communicating that it wasn't her time and she had many years left to live with lots of work to do. When they said "Who will take care of the baby?" she looked left and saw her son in the nursery crib, battered and bruised from the difficult labor with a misshapen head. The experiencer observed her body on the stretcher from a floating position face down. She heard the doctor's exact words expressing alarm and calling for the crash cart. She saw her baby son lying in his crib in the nursery, noting specific details about his appearance including bruising and misshapen head from the difficult delivery. She observed a large window below her floating position and received telepathic communication about being able to visit home. The thought of her injured newborn son made her resolve waver, and she fought to return, describing it like "swimming backwards" to get back into her body. Upon return, her body felt cold, damp, and painful, and she was momentarily angry at the medical staff for bringing her back, though she knew she had made the right choice.
