A military service member was hospitalized in Vietnam with severe burns from combat action. The medical team worked to stabilize them for transport to a hospital in Japan, though they have no memory of boarding the aircraft and only regained consciousness the next day in the burn ward. Their roommate, who had lost an arm and leg and was also severely burned, shared that his deceased fire team had appeared to him, telling him not to feel guilty about surviving and to continue with his life.
During transport in a C-130 hospital aircraft filled with wounded soldiers on stacked stretchers, the experiencer found themselves watching their own body from outside. They observed two Air Force nurse captains working desperately to save them - one administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation with their nose pinched off, while the other rhythmically pounded on their chest. They watched this scene dispassionately while sensing they were moving up and away, further back from the scene. They traveled to what they describe as a wonderful, cool, white-light place of incredible beauty, unlike anything experienced before or since, filled with tremendous peace and serenity. The experiencer observed specific medical procedures being performed on them in the aircraft. They saw one nurse captain pinching their nose while giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and another nurse captain with her left hand on the center of their breastbone, using her right hand to rhythmically pound their chest. They noted the interior layout of the C-130 with stretchers stacked floor to ceiling holding other wounded soldiers. The perspective was from outside their body, watching the resuscitation efforts dispassionately. Upon realizing what was happening, they made a conscious choice to return, wordlessly saying "No, wait. Not now" feeling they had too much left to do. They came to consciousness about a day later in Japan, and only recalled the experience when their roommate shared his own visitation from deceased comrades, causing the NDE memory to return "in a rush out of nowhere."
