At age 10 in 1981, shortly after parents' divorce, the experiencer went to Zuma Beach, Malibu with mother, younger brother, and mother's date. At sunset, while playing in unusual soup-like surf, the child was pulled by undertow into a vacuum of swirling water, slammed face-first against an unseen sandbar. Instantly, perspective changed to floating one story high above the body with panoramic 360-degree vision, seeing through dozens of eyes like a crown around the head, existing as invisible air. The child observed their body being pummeled, feeling only amusement at watching it flap like meat, with complete amnesia about their 10 years of life and no emotional connection to family members standing around. They experienced total freedom from gravity, worldly concerns, promises, guilt, societal pressures, and survival needs - feeling profound elation and weightlessness of soul. Colors were magnified and more acute than ever before or since. With childlike playfulness, they decided to depart upward when mother's scream of their name instantly returned them to the drowning body. Lungs burned, head pounded, body felt like dead weight. After crawling blindly and surfacing, mother helped them up. Five minutes later on the beach, they wept uncontrollably, having confirmed that consciousness thrives outside flesh, outside time, and never dies. Made an oath never to return to a body if given choice. Now at 40, the experience guides their spiritual quest.
