At age six, just starting first grade, the experiencer became gravely ill with rheumatic fever. A doctor made a house call and immediately ordered hospitalization. While in the hospital, lying flat on her back unable to move her arms, she noticed two people (a man and woman) standing in the right corner of the ceiling. They had no wings and didn't smile. Being shy and afraid of strangers, she was hesitant when the man told her telepathically to come with them. She began floating in the air, thinking "this is so easy, why didn't I think of doing this before?" An opening appeared to the right showing a beautiful field. She started following them but looked back over her left shoulder and saw her parents in a different hospital room, clearly visible though distant, looking sad and crying. She said "But my parents will be so sad they'll never get over it." The visitors instantly vanished and she was back in bed. She told her father later but his response wasn't positive, so she concluded she must have been dreaming, though she knew she wasn't. She blocked the memory until reading about NDEs years later. The doctor later told her mother that without penicillin, she would have died. She also recalls pre-birth memories of being content in the womb and not wanting to be born, knowing life would be harder outside.
