In 1969, a 32-year-old mother of five suddenly became severely ill with what appeared to be flu. Experiencing waves of nausea, knife-like stomach pains, migraine, and violent chills, her condition rapidly deteriorated. She felt blood stopping in her veins, starting from fingers and toes moving toward her trunk. Realizing death was imminent when it reached her heart and lungs, she mentally fought desperately to stay for her children with "superhuman strength." Her husband called paramedics when he saw her turn blue. She moved through a frightening dark tunnel toward a beautiful light at the end, arriving in indescribable beauty and love beyond earthly experience. She was enveloped in love and found herself "in the presence of God" - not a visual being but a knowing presence. She experienced a quick life review and realized her children now seemed "as insignificant as childhood toys" from this perspective. She was given "knowledge of the universe" (not retained upon return) before suddenly returning to struggle for air from the third oxygen tank. Hospitalized for two weeks with severe dehydration and critically low potassium requiring IV treatment, she initially couldn't discuss the experience for fear of psychiatric commitment. The experience brought lasting inner peace, complete lack of death fear, rock-solid faith, and inability to grieve for those who die, knowing they've gone somewhere wonderful. She later started an IANDS support group and considers the experience her greatest blessing.
