At age nine, Nina developed chicken pox which progressed to a serious complication with boils and facial swelling. After playing hard outdoors, she felt like she was "going out of her head" and knew something was seriously wrong. She was hospitalized for a week with nephritis (kidney disease), during which she nearly died according to her mother and doctor.
During the critical period in the hospital, Nina found herself in an ethereal place of light that felt safe - neither warm nor cold, just safe. She was no longer in her body but suspended in this light. Below her in a small circle that seemed separate from where she was, she could see the world in color with her mother's and doctor's faces looking at her with deep worry and pain. She felt immense love and compassion for her suffering mother who appeared to be losing her. Even though she was above them, she could paradoxically see their faces looking down at her body. She remained suspended in the light for a while, absolutely knowing what was happening and aware that she could choose where to be. Out of love for her mother, she chose to return. Both her mother and the doctor later confirmed they thought they had almost lost her. The experience left Nina with no fear of death and a deep sense of purpose, particularly regarding Native peoples. She developed heightened sensitivity to people and even inanimate objects. The challenging recovery period included six months of bed rest and over a year of restricted activity, leading to peer abuse that caused emotional difficulties. However, the NDE gave her unique understanding and the ability to help others in crisis, including successfully bringing her brother back from an LSD-induced dissociative state. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience includes clear out-of-body perception consistent with biblical accounts of spiritual consciousness beyond physical death. The ethereal realm of living light aligns with biblical descriptions of divine light and God's presence. The choice to return out of love for her mother reflects biblical themes of sacrificial love. The lasting spiritual transformation and enhanced ability to help others mirrors biblical spiritual gifts. Unbiblical elements: None clearly identified. While the experience lacks explicit Christian imagery like angels or Jesus, it doesn't contain elements that contradict scripture. The focus on love, light, and conscious choice to return for another's wellbeing aligns with biblical values. Her later interest in Native spirituality mentioned in background represents personal development rather than part of the NDE itself.
