Joanna, age 37, experienced a heart attack in 1992 while in the emergency room. She was told she was having a heart attack, which surprised medical staff given her age, race, gender, and lack of risk factors. While her ex-husband was telling her he would care for their daughter, she saw a white coating moving from the bottom of the door upward until everything was the purest white she had ever seen. Her daughter witnessed the heart monitor flatline. Joanna was engulfed by the best feeling of her life - serenity, tranquility, calm, with no illness, pain or suffering present. She saw soft whiteness extending for miles, then bluish-gray silhouettes of many people of all ages. A woman approached and took her hand, radiating love and acceptance. They talked but she doesn't remember the conversation. She woke with her head tilted down and a doctor saying she gave them "quite a scare." She felt sad and empty, wanting to return to that place. The experience helped her counsel two dying people before their deaths.
