A 19-year-old mother became critically ill with spinal meningitis and fell into a coma for five days. Her condition was so grave that a priest was called to administer last rites as she was unresponsive and dying. During her coma, she experienced consciousness in a different reality, feeling wonderful peace without any sense of having a body. She existed in an expansive state where everything was connected as one - she was part of everything and everything was her. There was no sense of individual identity or thoughts about her earthly life. She floated formlessly in this unified consciousness, experiencing perfect contentment.
Deep in her consciousness, she began hearing her name being called. Initially, she ignored it, wanting to remain in the peaceful state. The voice grew louder, and she recognized it as her mother's. Her mother said "Sharen, Alfie needs you so much," referring to her 8-month-old baby whom she had completely forgotten about. Upon hearing her baby's name repeated, she suddenly remembered and thought "I have to go back." Immediately after making this choice, she felt a powerful swooshing sensation, like being sucked by a vacuum, and was pulled back into her body. She opened her eyes to find her mother sitting beside her hospital bed, crying. The experience has never left her, particularly the beautiful feeling and sense of oneness with all creation. She consciously chose to return for her child.
