A 10-year-old boy was swimming at a state park lake when he ventured beyond the buoy line into deep water, not realizing there was an immediate drop-off. Unable to swim, he went under and began thrashing desperately to reach the surface. After struggling briefly, he experienced a tremendous jerk within his body, which he described as a natural part of the dying process. Suddenly, he found himself outside his body in a semi-conscious state, floating peacefully without any struggle. He felt completely content, unbelievably happy, and enveloped by a loving presence. Time ceased to exist for him - there was no future or past, only the experience of the present moment. He was in this blissful state when his father pulled him from the deep water to safety. The boy distinctly remembers feeling disappointed about returning, as he did not want to leave the peaceful state. His father had entered the water fully clothed to rescue him and later commented "You were just about a goner" while drying money from his wallet on the sand. The experience left the boy with a profound memory of the peace and happiness he felt while separated from his body.
