On June 10, 2021, an 82-year-old man watching evening news mysteriously found himself in a lovely, very comfortable place. His memory was completely erased regarding why he liked it so much, including all visual and sensory recollections, except hearing his wife Carol's distant voice saying "Charles, wake up." He chose to ignore her twice as he didn't want to leave this wonderful "wherever." On her third call, he decided to comply. He came to with arms moving up and down and head shaking in spasmodic movements characteristic of a situational clonic seizure lasting about one minute. His eyes had been open but rolled back showing only whites - his only seizure in 82 years.
At the emergency room, his pulse was only 30 bpm indicating complete heart block where the SA node wasn't conducting regular impulses to ventricles. Asked about resuscitation preferences while being wheeled to surgery, he said yes but admitted the mystical place was appealing. After two hours of painful cardioversion shocks, catheters, morphine, and chest incision without full anesthesia, he received a titanium pacemaker. The device now maintains his heart rate in the mid-60s and is designed for 10+ years. Released from ICU the next afternoon, he resumed all normal activities. He remains convinced this minute-long experience was a near-death experience, though he cannot recall specific details of where he was.
