In 1978, a 9-year-old underwent surgery to repair a coarctation of the aorta, a congenital heart defect that had caused congestive heart failure by restricting blood flow to her lower body and causing extreme hypertension in the upper body. The defect was worse than anticipated, requiring an extended period without blood flow to her legs while waiting for a dacron patch. The surgeon told her mother she would likely never walk again, and she failed multiple paralysis tests while sedated.
On Thanksgiving Day after surgery, while connected to multiple tubes, IVs, ventilator, and chest tube, she became aware of looking down at herself from above. She saw her mother walking into the room, then observed several nurses and a doctor surrounding her bed from an elevated perspective. She watched a nurse putting medication in her IV and saw her mother collapse to the floor as the doctor yelled to get her out. During this medical crisis, she felt herself leaving and briefly thought about her horse and dog but decided they would be fine. She realized consciousness survived death, feeling happy that awareness continued beyond the body. She saw many people in shadows with backlighting, with two figures standing out prominently. Though she didn't recognize them, she felt drawn toward them and reached out with her arms before being pulled back into her body against her will. She fought the ventilator upon waking, and as the staff sedated her, they celebrated because her foot was wiggling rapidly, proving she wasn't paralyzed. A year later, while exploring her grandmother's shed, she discovered an old cigar box containing black and white photographs. She immediately recognized two people in one photo as the figures from her NDE. Her grandmother sighed and revealed they were her parents who had died long before the girl was born. This box contained the only known pictures of them and had been lost for years. The girl considered this concrete evidence of her near-death experience, and her brother insisted the experience changed her permanently.
