On April 8, 2000, a 14-year-old traveled from Fresno to Oceanside with his older brother and two family friends to pick up his brother's 2-year-old daughter. Despite seeing a black cat cross their path and feeling something wasn't right, he continued on the trip. The brothers spent an unusually affectionate day together playing pool. On the return journey, after stopping to pray for safe travels, the driver fell asleep and the car swerved across the road, hit a pole, and burst into flames.
At the moment of impact, the experiencer felt his body leave the car and floated above, looking down at his physical body still burning inside the vehicle. In an instant, he was transported to a place with big beautiful flowing grass, stunning waterfalls, and soft instruments playing. He floated over this landscape before entering a tunnel with an unbelievably bright light. As he approached the end of the tunnel, he saw a human-like figure that appeared as a shadow. The figure said to him, "Son, it's not your time yet," and instantly he snapped back into his body, now outside the burning car. He attempted to save his brother who was leaning over the baby's car seat protectively, but the fire was too intense. His brother and the baby died in the fire while the driver and other passenger survived with minor or no burns. When a woman arrived, he asked to lie in her car seat despite her initial refusal. At the hospital, still in shock, he told his mother that his brother and the baby were fine at another hospital. He then went into a coma for a month, spent 9 months total in the hospital, underwent 19 surgeries, and eventually made a full recovery. The experience showed him classic NDE elements including out-of-body observation of his burning body and travel through a tunnel toward a bright light with a divine figure.
