On August 1, 2011, while walking in a parking lot in Rapid City, SD, the experiencer felt his chest flutter with what seemed like a heart arrhythmia that stopped within seconds. His upper chest then began feeling like it was inflating, which doctors later explained was likely his heart in fatal arrhythmia, not pumping and back-filling with blood, causing the heart to swell. He then experienced a euphoric surge of being immersed in pure love as everything turned brilliant white.
He stumbled to his hands and knees, feeling so wonderful he wanted to roll over and succumb to the overwhelming feeling of love and light. He tried to see "to the other side" but could only perceive brilliant white light surrounding him. At that moment, he realized he was dying but fought against it, not wanting to die in a parking lot where someone might run him over. He thought of his wife and children and the things he still needed to accomplish. With all his strength, he struggled to his feet and staggered a few steps. The white light, euphoria, and chest swelling gradually subsided as he moved forward. After about 45 seconds total, everything returned to normal as if nothing had happened. He walked up three flights of stairs to his apartment and resumed work, feeling completely normal but puzzled by the experience. He delayed telling his wife for several days. When she insisted he see a doctor, all medical readings including EKG were normal. However, the internal medicine doctor said he was a "flat liner" and his neurologist described it as a "significant arrhythmic event." Four years later, in July 2015, he was found to have a 99.9% blocked circumflex artery requiring three overlapping stents. The interventional cardiologist suggested his near-death experience may have been a forewarning related to arterial insufficiencies.
