At age nine, the subject was hit by a car while riding his bike, thrown 75 feet, and landed on his head, crushing part of his skull with a pear-sized hole over the right parietal lobe. A surgeon and his wife witnessed the accident; the surgeon immediately performed CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while his wife called 911. Within three minutes, the subject had lost a third of his blood on the pavement. At the hospital, he received blood transfusions, had his ruptured spleen removed, and underwent eight hours of surgery as two neurosurgeons meticulously removed bone shards from his brain. His vital signs dropped and he fell into a coma with very poor prognosis for survival. During surgery, when his vital signs dropped dangerously low, his mother looked at him through the OR window saying "Isn't he beautiful," after which his vital signs inexplicably began climbing steadily. The subject vividly recalls seeing himself from above the operating table, looking down at silhouettes around the table with a bright light nearby (possibly the operating room light). He was then removed from the scene and surrounded by darkness and nothingness, but fully enveloped in the peace and love of God's presence. He wanted to stay but had no ability to make decisions. The last thing he remembers is God's conviction: "Regardless of what happens, it's going to be okay." He woke from his coma four days later, underwent six months of physical therapy, and made a complete recovery despite all medical prognoses. The experience gave him unshakeable conviction that God exists, loves him, and has a purpose for his life.
