In October 2001, a gay man underwent surgery to remove precancerous growths from his colon. During the procedure, the anesthetist gave him another full dose when he appeared to be coming around. Due to his severe allergy to opiates, he was given IV Valium and Demerol. His heart stopped during surgery for 80 seconds before being restarted. Upon cardiac arrest, he experienced a violent bolting out of his body and looked down at the operating room. He could sense the emotions of everyone present, particularly feeling the anesthesiologist's racing heart and dread about being responsible. He saw the tiled operating room with white and green ceramic tiles like the 1950s - a detail later confirmed by the recovery nurse who knew patients were unconscious before entering the OR. He shot upward at rocket speed, seeing a silver cord with a purplish tinge attached to his spirit. He entered a place of brilliant white light filled with love, understanding, and indescribable joy. He encountered hundreds or thousands of light beings, then reunited with his deceased husband who appeared as silvery energy. They embraced, spinning and conjoining their energy while conversing for what seemed like hours. He also met his deceased grandmother, great-aunt, and surprisingly his former mother-in-law, with whom he made peace. His husband told him he had to return to complete his purpose. He found himself back in his body and woke at 5:30 PM in recovery after being out all day.
