At approximately age 15-16, while riding a deceased neighbor's racehorse with a friend on a spring day, the experiencer fell from the horse for unknown reasons and lost consciousness, suffering head trauma that cracked their helmet. During the brief unconscious period, they saw a bright background light with desert-like foreground containing tumbleweeds, as the light grew brighter, closer, and wider. A figure approached like an overexposed photograph where forms but not details were visible. Though never seeing the face clearly and communication being telepathic rather than spoken, they recognized the presence as Mr. M, the deceased former owner of the horses who had died from a heart attack years earlier. Mr. M delivered a crucial message: "I FELT COMPELLED I had to make a CHOICE and get off the fence 'to believe or not to believe in God and an afterlife.' It's not your time yet, go back." Upon regaining consciousness, the experiencer sat up confused, holding their ears while repeatedly saying "My brains are coming out of my ears," genuinely believing this despite their friend's laughter. After walking home without seeking medical attention (despite probable concussion), they kept the experience secret for years. The encounter left them puzzled as an agnostic borderline atheist who could never fully deny the experience's reality. Years later, around 2007-2008 in their forties, discovering the TV show "Beyond and Back" about NDEs provided a name for their experience. They shared it with Mr. M's widow, bringing her comfort. From 2012-2014, following a painful divorce and destructive relationships, they experienced spiritual nagging to understand the experience. In 2014 they began attending church, believing the NDE occurred to keep faith open and for additional purposes not yet fully understood.
