A young atheist woman, raised religious but atheist since childhood, went into shock from rapid blood loss and lost consciousness, though she notes she did not die. She experienced what she describes as more than a vision - a whole-body experience similar to but better than taking mushrooms. She found herself floating or slowly flying through a huge, limitless blue sky with white puffy clouds. An overwhelming feeling of love, warmth, happiness, and peace enveloped her with the sense that all things would be good forever. The feeling was so intense it created an almost physical swelling in her chest. She could hear and feel wind passing by her ears and on her body, though she never looked to see if she had a physical form. Beautiful distant singing of a female voice reached her, which she gradually recognized as someone singing her name "Colleen" in a lovely singsong tone, growing louder and closer. She then found herself back in the hospital with a nurse yelling her name, slapping her face, and holding ammonia capsules under her nose. Her friend who witnessed the event noted she had a "stupid grin" on her face during the experience. The experience was so incredible that she now jokes she would choose exsanguination as her preferred method of death. She didn't initially recognize this as an NDE since she hadn't died and had previous psychedelic experiences that had already shifted her worldview. Significantly, as an atheist, she notes the wonderful experience didn't contradict her atheism, as religious doctrine would suggest she shouldn't have had such a positive experience.
