In 2010, a woman became critically ill due to alcohol abuse and was hospitalized with a severely weakened immune system. She developed multiple hospital-acquired infections leading to sepsis and respiratory failure, requiring a tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation on life support. Her family was told she had little chance of survival, and if she did survive, she would likely have significant mental deficits. During her illness, she became aware of being in a beautiful place that was vivid to all her senses. She felt like light or energy in a wonderfully indescribable state, feeling one with the universe in a way where she was the universe and the universe was her. A male figure approached whom she believed was her deceased grandfather, and they began laughing with joy at being together. They communicated telepathically while walking along a path toward a gate. After walking for some time, the figure asked her to observe that despite their walking, they were no closer to the gate. When she confirmed this observation, he said "You know what that means," to which she replied "Yes, it's not my time to be here." They both laughed happily, and her next memory was waking up in the hospital. She felt that while part of the light, she was experiencing her true being in an amazing state of perfection, joy, light, and energy. The experience gave her a new understanding of biblical verses about being made in God's image and God being the beginning and end, interpreting these to mean we are all the beginning and end of the universe, all connected and never truly ending.
