An 18-year-old male went tubing with friends after finishing high school. At a familiar waterfall with a 4-5 foot drop, he attempted to go over without holding the tube, having done this many times before. However, he fell backward and became trapped in the waterfall's undertow. Despite knowing he should swim down and around, panic drove him to swim upward repeatedly. After three failed attempts to reach the surface, he ran out of energy and inhaled water.
As he began breathing water, his body slowed and he realized he wouldn't escape. His last thought was "Dying's not so bad after all!" After a moment of panic then acceptance, his spirit left through the top of his head. He briefly glimpsed his body suspended in the river with hair floating before finding himself in outer space. He encountered a glowing entity he called a "space slug" - an elongated four-dimensional object containing every experience of his life. He maintained full consciousness and identity throughout, noting "I was still me." From this void perspective, he could perceive his entire life simultaneously without feeling overwhelmed. The primary observation was viewing his complete life as a four-dimensional object in space, able to comprehend all experiences at once. He realized humans have far greater capacity for information in spirit form than in physical bodies. He noticed some life experiences were brighter, leading to the insight that we live for just a few special moments with the rest being filler. Just as he began examining his life in detail, he experienced a large sucking sensation and returned to his body. A friend saw his hair floating and pulled him out. He coughed up large amounts of water, spent the night taking small breaths due to lung damage, but hid his condition from his athletic friends. The experience gave him profound insights about consciousness surviving bodily death and the true nature of human existence beyond physical limitations.
