The subject underwent a D&E procedure after a miscarriage in May 2008, with a tremendous fear of not waking from anesthesia. During the procedure, she experienced an extremely rare amniotic fluid embolism that caused cardiac arrest and DIC (profuse bleeding). She was in a coma for two days, unable to speak or see clearly upon awakening.
During the experience, she found herself in a room filled with bright, white light. She was kneeling on the floor, looking up and begging to someone behind or within the source of light - whom she knew in her heart was God - not to let her die. Her concern was specifically for her mother, who had already lost another daughter nine years earlier. She didn't want it to be unfair for her mother to lose both daughters. Within that light, she experienced profound warmth and peace. Her begging came not from desperation but from love and concern for her mother. The specific observation was seeing herself in a bright white light-filled room, kneeling and communicating with God. She had clear awareness of being in a different space and experienced direct communication with a divine presence. The memory of this experience came to her approximately two weeks after returning home from the hospital, arriving as a very strong and vivid recollection. After recovery, she felt a deeper calling to make positive impacts daily, whether making someone smile, helping her daughters with reading, volunteering at school, or speaking to women's groups. She gained a strong conviction that deep peace from God's love and light is possible in both life and death.
