The experiencer underwent a four-hour operation on her hip and pelvis, waking in the high dependency unit with terrible pain and a scratched esophagus preventing speech. After initially recovering, she began feeling unwell and tried to get the nurse's attention by banging on the bed. She heard machines alarming, a nurse shouting, and a man replying before losing consciousness. The doctor later confirmed her heart had stopped for a while.
Suddenly, she found herself in a completely black space unlike any darkness she had ever seen before. Despite the total blackness, she felt no fear, only complete calm. Looking to her left, she thought "This is ok, I am ok. I don't feel pain! I feel alright." She was utterly and totally calm. Though she didn't think she had died, she found herself thinking "If this is it, I really don't mind!" - a thought that surprised her given her loving family and dependent children. She felt she was saying goodbye to them simply by dying, and that her perception and memories of them were dying with her. It felt as if everyone was dying, not just her. Looking down, she couldn't see her body though she thought she was lying down. To her right stood a woman who was a shining white light with wavy hair, smiling kindly at her. The being seemed to say "Kim, it's alright, come back" - notably using "come" rather than "go" back. Before she could react, she was suddenly back in her body on the bed. She awoke surrounded by medical staff and equipment, though it felt like only moments had passed. The pain instantly returned. She immediately looked for the lady she had seen but found no one resembling her. The transformation was profound - she became unafraid of death and developed an intense interest in NDEs.
