On July 2, 2000, while painting his house, the experiencer fell 25-30 feet from a ladder, hitting head-first on a landscape timber. His wife and son witnessed the horrific fall, seeing him bounce off the ground with blood streaming from his head. EMTs found him with critical injuries including a crushed left eye orbit requiring reconstructive surgery, both wrists broken, and severe brain swelling. The doctors prepared his wife for the worst as they monitored whether the brain swelling was internal or external.
During his unconscious state lasting three days, he experienced a profound distressing NDE. He found himself in a spiritual realm where he could see and feel things beyond the physical body. Evil forces attempted to confuse and overwhelm him, creating hurricane-force winds as he crawled toward what God was offering versus being pulled by evil's temptations. He experienced his past immoral acts and had to choose between those satisfactions or God's love. The spiritual attacks were unmerciful, with entities trying to penetrate his soul while he could only yell, but God's spirit protected and shielded him. The most distressing observation was seeing what appeared to be oceans upon oceans of souls in hell - hundreds of millions of lost loved ones. He felt their horror, pain, and torture intensely, with their wailing and hurt projecting at him so powerfully he couldn't stop it. Despite not being able to determine the depth of these spiritual oceans, he knew with certainty they were real. Eventually, he saw the entryway into heaven and stood before it, feeling God's incredible love, peace, and gentle radiance. After three days, he emerged from unconsciousness transformed with a spirit of gentleness, humbleness, kindness, and patience. He underwent multiple surgeries including titanium reconstruction around his eye and surgery on both broken wrists.
