On August 29, 2001, working her last shift at a Montana sapphire mine before college, the 19-year-old subject was buried when a 10-foot trench wall collapsed, dropping four tons of dirt on her. She was completely buried for 1.5-2 minutes. Everything went black and she found herself outside her body in the black universe where time didn't exist. In this familiar place, she had a conversation with the universe about choosing to die or live. She said "I'm not done yet - there are things I need to do" and specifically mentioned "I haven't been a judge yet." Upon choosing to return, she was immediately back in her body, aware of every injury including burst lungs, kidney and spleen bleeding. She remained conscious throughout the 2.5-hour transport, requiring four units of blood and emergency chest tubes. Despite extensive injuries including spine, rib, pelvic fractures and organ damage, she never needed surgery. She walked in six weeks and skied four months later. In that moment of choice, she made a revised contract with the universe that she must have a body allowing her to do things she loves in nature. From the second she returned, she knew she would be okay.
