Working aboard an ocean research vessel, the subject was repairing sonar equipment with three teammates in a converted cargo container workshop. During heavy seas, while diagnosing electrical issues with the unit powered up, his forearm grazed high-voltage rails carrying 500 volts, throwing him backward against a wall. He immediately found himself out of body, above the trailer as if it had no ceiling, observing himself leaning backward with eyes closed while his three friends stared in shock. He could hear the ocean, engines, and machinery but felt no breathing or heartbeat. He was weightless and knew he could "leave upward" if he chose. He closely observed his friends' frightened faces, knowing their thoughts about first aid and how to report his death. Filled with compassion for their fear and not wanting them to deal with his death, and knowing he had more to love and do, he swooped back into his body. He opened his eyes feeling pain and smelling burnt flesh. His coworkers said he had "disappeared" momentarily. The experience remained private until years later when he shared it with his Christian wife who understood he had been dead and returned.
