In winter 2012, after drinking at a gathering, the subject drove a friend home on snowy roads. While returning alone, he lost control on the slippery asphalt and crashed directly into a roundabout. The police later told a friend that he had died in the accident. Between the crash and waking at the hospital, he experienced an extremely bright reddish light on the horizon, coupled with warm temperature that was pleasing to his eyes and body. The light resembled looking at the sun through fingers on a summer day. He sensed great commotion with people moving hastily and talking, though he could not understand their words or recognize anyone. When he regained consciousness at the hospital, about ten people including friends, police, and doctors were present. The memory of that warm, bright light has remained vivid and brings him joy whenever he recalls it. Despite the severity of the crash and being told he had died, he emerged without serious injuries.
