The experiencer was in the final stage of labor after several days, sometimes conscious but mostly unaware of events. Her husband stayed away from the delivery room during this era when fathers were not permitted in delivery rooms. During a critical moment in labor when her son was not well and needed immediate treatment, she experienced leaving her body.
She left the delivery room and traveled to their flat where she observed her husband and a friend watching television at 9:00 PM. In her out-of-body state, she told her husband it was time to come to the hospital. Despite visiting hours being over and the late hour making entry unlikely, he put on his coat and came. The medical staff, needing his signature for urgent treatment of their unwell newborn, made an exception and allowed him entry to see the baby and authorize necessary medical intervention. During the experience, someone told her it was not her time, and she returned unwillingly to her body. A doctor was shouting at her upon her return. She didn't see her son until the next day. Now 40 years later, she reflects on this child as her "very special gift." The veridical aspect of this experience centers on her accurate observation of her husband at home at 9:00 PM and his subsequent arrival at the hospital at an hour when he normally would not have been admitted. The exception made for him due to the baby's medical emergency confirmed the unusual timing of his arrival, suggesting her out-of-body communication or observation may have had real effects.
