The experiencer was driving home after visiting his brother following a devastating incident with his wife and another man. Emotionally shattered and exhausted from working many hours, he dozed off momentarily while driving downhill in the rain. Coming through an intersection at 70 mph, he crashed into a stopped vehicle, cutting his chin on the steering wheel and hitting his head on the windshield. He fell from the car to the road in terrible pain.
During his near-death experience, he found himself in a sitting position surrounded by a tunnel down to his waist, feeling and seeing this distinctive environment. He experienced overwhelmingly strong love and sensed everything being okay. A bright light appeared at the end of the long tunnel, though he felt afraid because of how he had lived his life, despite the light seeming very loving. He recognized the outer darkness as a void and felt that time didn't exist, thinking "How silly of us." He saw a scene of his casket with his family standing sadly around it, particularly noting his two children who appeared larger than the others in their sadness. He then found himself about six feet above the vehicle he had hit, thinking "I'm not dead I'm here. Everything is okay." Looking down at the road, he saw people examining his body. He thought "that's not me. I wouldn't cry over that thing. That is like a cigarette butt; it has served its purpose. It's a vehicle to get through this physical world." His last memory was being at a ditch where he had walked to relieve himself before dying, stepping into stagnant water, then being in an ambulance. The experience profoundly changed his perspective on death and religious doctrine. He could no longer accept fear and punishment-based religious teachings, recognizing that "God is love, unconditional love" who gives free will. The loss of his brother to suicide years later reinforced his belief that love and forgiveness, not fear and control, represent divine truth and humanity's purpose.
