A professor of religion experienced two NDEs in 2004, both triggered by fire ant stings causing anaphylactic shock and cardiac arrhythmia due to his combination of Brugada Syndrome and severe insect venom allergy. The first occurred on May 16, 2004, during his son's baptism celebration in a Florida park. Within 45 seconds of being stung, his heart went into ventricular fibrillation. He was unconscious for 45 minutes while paramedics performed resuscitation. The second occurred six weeks later on June 27, 2004, in a Sufi tomb complex in Hyderabad, India, during his doctoral research.
During both experiences, he found himself buoyed in an inky nighttime ocean that was simultaneously an abyss and celestial paradise. He experienced 360-degree perception in a luminescent, comforting space filled with glowing lights that were love itself - luminescent souls or celestial beings intimately familiar and nurturing. He felt the profound reality of Indra's Net, where all beings are interconnected through love at the deepest level. Time and space operated differently, and he passed through several emanating realms or heavens. He felt his children calling him back through feedback loops of love, particularly his infant son Micah and unborn future son, knowing he had to return to raise them. Specific observations included viewing his body from above in the park, experiencing multiple levels of reality simultaneously, and understanding cosmic interconnections. He consciously used the love of his family to "reboot" his deceased body. During the second NDE in India, he was oriented toward Mecca on a prayer rug while a Sufi healer performed healing rituals, and he experienced the same oceanic realm but with less terror and more peace. The experiences convinced him that death is barely a nudge away, that consciousness continues beyond physical death, and that love is the fundamental reality underlying all existence. He now lives knowing that his children's love is "the very how" of his continued existence.
