A 26-year-old military wife experienced an NDE during an emergency cesarean section in northern Italy in 1999. On her due date, after many hours of labor, she was strapped to an operating table during a contraction for emergency surgery. Communication was difficult as she spoke limited Italian and had to estimate her weight in kilograms for anesthesia dosing. She was terrified being far from family and was put under general anesthesia while counting backwards from 100.
She found herself sucked out of her body into a vast dark empty space that extended infinitely, floating forward without a body but with 360-degree vision. It was like outer space without stars or planets - she could somehow see even though it was dark, as if it was lit up. Time did not exist in this space, and she couldn't tell if the experience lasted 15 seconds or 15 minutes. Upon realizing she had died, she felt utter shock and had only two thoughts: "Oh no, I'm dead" and overwhelming sadness that she wouldn't get to see her baby. The experience was so real that she initially thought it might be normal for surgery, having never had surgery before. She pushed the memory away for twenty-two years until realizing that brains cannot dream under general anesthesia. After researching NDEs, she discovered others had experienced the exact same dark void space outside their physical bodies, causing her to have a panic reaction upon this realization. Since understanding her NDE, she has experienced enhanced intuition with very sharp insights and sometimes just knowing things. She has had premonition flashes before sleep of events that later happened. She feels more spiritual than religious and has become certain that consciousness continues beyond death. Her experience, though brief, convinced her that lives exist outside this world and that consciousness does not die but continues to the next realm.
