In 1976 Montreal, a six-year-old boy in grade one was playing in an icy school playground during winter recess when a friend took his winter hat and ran. While chasing him, the boy slipped on ice, fell, and cracked his skull. He was guided to a classroom desk where he became nauseous and vomited before falling unconscious. An ambulance took him to the hospital where he experienced cardiac and respiratory arrest lasting 3.5 minutes, with at least one additional arrest episode. His family doctor later confirmed that Dr. White had saved his life during the resuscitation.
During the cardiac arrest, he found himself floating above his body near the operating room ceiling, watching a man pushing on his chest with more people present than when he had entered. He observed Dr. White with his white sideburns, feeling the doctor's distress. From this elevated perspective, he could see the entire resuscitation effort taking place below. The experience was accompanied by overwhelming unconditional love and a sense of complete oneness with everything in creation - people, plants, animals, stars, rocks, space - all connected through love. He saw an incredibly bright white light to his left that he initially thought was a window, then moved toward it. When he approached the light, he felt like a rubber band snapped and was propelled back into his body. Later memories revealed he had walked over a bow-shaped bridge to a bench in a beautiful, peaceful place where he met a man in a robe he knew to be Jesus. They talked for what seemed like a long time, with Jesus radiating love. When told he had to go back because his mother needed him, he was sent back to his body. Years later at age 16, his family doctor confirmed that Dr. White had indeed performed the resuscitation and that the details the boy had observed from above were accurate. The memory of the experience had been suppressed until revealed during meditation decades later, when his guide restored the complete memory. The experience also connected to an earlier memory from when he was 14 days old in an orphanage, where he had floated above rows of cribs and heard a similar comforting voice.
