In April 2017, a 57-year-old person was driving seven hours to get a tattoo when their vehicle lost control on the interstate, possibly due to a dog in the road. The car spun into the center guardrail and rolled three times over the median into oncoming traffic on the southbound side. The accident resulted in a subdural hematoma and subarachnoid hemorrhage, requiring emergency treatment in the Neurovascular ICU. Despite the severity, no bones were broken, though the person needed stitches in their scalp and lip and required a cane for walking initially.
The experiencer has complete amnesia about the accident itself, with their last trustworthy memory being driving north and seeing a road fatality sign on Friday. They didn't return to conscious awareness until Sunday afternoon in the ICU, describing it not as waking up but as being "back in my body after stepping away from it." Though unable to form new memories during the brain injury period, they retained profound feelings from the experience. The most significant aspect was experiencing "the deepest calm I've ever felt, stemming from a sense of understanding and accepting the entire universe." This wasn't just peace but a complete comprehension and acceptance of everything. While maintaining the same personality, their perspective has expanded dramatically. Pre-accident memories feel qualitatively different, like "old save files in a video game that I can't play." The lasting transformation includes difficulty with materialistic values and a permanent sense of universal connection.
