At age 18, before starting college, the experiencer succumbed to mononucleosis for the second time after "burning the candle at both ends" with two jobs, active social life, and little sleep. She was hospitalized with an extremely high temperature and throat/airways almost completely swollen closed. Her mother told her to drink water quickly or she would die. While delirious, she drank the water and experienced a whooshing sound.
She then heard trumpets or horns making a pretty but not melodic noise. She saw an extremely bright tunnel of light going up to the right with darker figures in it. She wasn't afraid and thought "I drank the water; I'm not supposed to die, but this is kind of cool." Then she whooshed back. Her mother later confirmed she had broken her fever and her white blood cell count improved. Her hearing was severely affected, remaining muffled for an extended period. Despite being very ill, she insisted on attending college as planned. Her hearing problems and exhaustion nearly caused her to flunk out initially, but she slowly recovered. Years later, when she learned about NDEs through media, she recognized her experience as one. Following the NDE, she developed several abilities and insights: always knowing she would be close to a little girl (fulfilled through raising her granddaughter), ability to communicate with animals, success in teaching inner-city students and community theater, and psychic abilities including correctly calling 12 cards in a row at blackjack and knowing future events. She attributes her transformation from a timid, shy child to a confident, unafraid adult to her NDE and the certainty it gave her about life after death.
